Treasure in a Tamarind Grove

Wonderstruck by the Devara kaadu ( Sacred Grove) Nallur Thopu , now called Nallur Biodiversity Heritage Grove .The first of such sites in India.  Near Devanahalli . 
54 Acres , 295 Tamarind trees , the oldest being 410 yrs old . The Thopu is believed to have originated 800 years ago , under Chola reign . To prove which , some remnants of a Chola period temples are found scattered in the grove,. Still , the beautiful sculpted walls stand intact . 
Just outside the Grove are two other plain ones have fallen apart. And the stray shepherd there spins a tale of pots of treasure dug up and spirited away from there .....yarns for our entertainment i guess ! 
 
Inside the grove is also a fully rebuilt Gangamma temple of unknown antiquity. 

There's a forlorn beauty , finding  the little, lonely temple nestling among the giant old trees.........

Last month,during a rather protracted incarceration in a hospital room as "Attender" for a patient, i had to learn to live with the constant background score of wailing sirens. The ominous, panic-laden tone of the Ambulance siren has always thrust a clammy fist into the gut , right from childhood........... TRANQUEBAR OF THE DANES

Too much expectation leads to disappointment. This i realised on my second trip to Tranquebar . The  very First trip   had been a voyage of discovery. And that was when the sense of wonder had still not traipsed away into the Realm of the Jaded,and the stock of stardust in the eyes was still not depleted.We were told nothing except that we were going to a nice beach for a picnic. Curiosity went only as far as the name : "Tran- ke - baar ". what kind of name was that for a tamilian fishing village ? The beach turned out to be quite a tame affair. Nothing like Marina of Madras or Kodikarai ( Point Calimere ) near Vedaranyam . Here it was narrow,gray and smelly. But soon, we " discovered " wonders. A massive,Norwegian fort called Dansborg ( Built 1622) An entrance archway to the hamlet, called " Landgate ", sporting a coat of arms like what we saw only on the castles in fairy tale books. A mysterious Hero of Many Names

Finding Ravaleshwara   . Veeragals , ( Hero stones ) turn up regularly in rural areas where development has not been fast and furious . Passing through countrysides , if one keeps eyes open , one is sure to stumble upon memorial  stones , lying by dried up tanks , near temples , in fields and wastelands , under trees or serving the village as a washing slab , a post to tie up cattle , as steps to a granery etc depending on size and thickness . Many a time they are also smeared with turmeric and vermillion in a show of respect .  In oral tradition , folk lores are built around a heroic event that happened  in the history of the village  ; these  then grow into sacred mythology . In time , the much celebrated Hero turns into a Village Guardian whose spirit  protects the village  . Finally he becomes a god , an Ishvara .
