Treasure in a Tamarind Grove

Wonderstruck by the Devara kaadu ( Sacred Grove) Nallur Thopu , now called Nallur Biodiversity Heritage Grove .The first of such sites in India.  Near Devanahalli . 
54 Acres , 295 Tamarind trees , the oldest being 410 yrs old . The Thopu is believed to have originated 800 years ago , under Chola reign . To prove which , some remnants of a Chola period temples are found scattered in the grove,. Still , the beautiful sculpted walls stand intact . 
Just outside the Grove are two other plain ones have fallen apart. And the stray shepherd there spins a tale of pots of treasure dug up and spirited away from there .....yarns for our entertainment i guess ! 
 
Inside the grove is also a fully rebuilt Gangamma temple of unknown antiquity. 

There's a forlorn beauty , finding  the little, lonely temple nestling among the giant old trees.........

Finding Ravaleshwara   . Veeragals , ( Hero stones ) turn up regularly in rural areas where development has not been fast and furious . Passing through countrysides , if one keeps eyes open , one is sure to stumble upon memorial  stones , lying by dried up tanks , near temples , in fields and wastelands , under trees or serving the village as a washing slab , a post to tie up cattle , as steps to a granery etc depending on size and thickness . Unprecedented deluge in Karnataka and Andhrapradesh. And just the other day, the lament was about Drought. As they say in vernacular : "Athivrishti - Anaavrishti". The usual post crisis finger pointings are going on , full steam. "Avoidable tragedy" is the unanimous verdict. We do have Disaster Prevention and Management committees. Also, pertinently, Disaster Relief Funds......Even marmosets learn, at least by pavlovian reflex. We never learn. It was quite eerie to see images of the Tunga flooding the shrine in Mantralayam. Never have i seen the river there being anything more than a thin, sluggish stream, coursing well away from the bank . One always had to cross expanses of hot rocks to get the mandatory holy sprinkle. * .....Now I think of a little girl - is she safe ? From Text Book to Pagoda

Has any primary school child in our country ever escaped the travails of getting right the spelling and pronunciation of the famous Chinese name that has been popping up without fail in all history text books since British times ? Huen Tsang . Hyuin Zang . Hsien Tsiang etc etc. From Nalanda to Mauryan cities to Deccani civilization, most of what we know bear the stamp of veracity, because this ubiquitous Tang Dynasty Monk from China made meticulous notes about whatever he saw on his visit to India. When I learnt that The Wild Goose Pagoda in Shaanxi province ( China ) listed in our itinerary is a monument to that amazing textbook character, Huein Tsang, I was thrilled !
